Sandy Beach Couple’s Session | Honolulu Portrait Photographer
My sister Maribeth (I grew up calling her Mary) loves to travel, so I can expect her to visit me and my family every year. Her significant other, Johnny, is an enthusiast photographer so he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit Hawaii while we are living here for the next 3+ years.
Along with driving around the island and photographing + exploring as many areas as they can, they also wanted to document their time spent on Oahu with a formal portrait session. Lucky for Mary, her big sis is a photographer and just happens to love photographing couple’s sessions.
Instead of the traditional bright, tropical, and cheery colors you would see in many vacation portraits, we opted for deeper hues and tones–think Fall. We chose Sandy Beach Park as our location for the darker sand and dark rocky areas.
A great plus for vacationers who are looking to have a photography session done is that they are very flexible with dates and times. I absolutely love–and prefer–to shoot during a weeknight. This minimizes both parking and foot traffic problems at the beaches, especially popular ones. Sandy Beach is right next to the Halona Blowhole Lookout, so weekend sessions here can be tricky. Thankfully, my sister and Johnny were able to squeeze in a weeknight session before their flight left the next day.
The waves were a bit rough that evening and it was more overcast than usual, but I was able to work with the available light (Session Tip: Start your South/East shore sessions a bit earlier than usual). Here are some of my favorites below, enjoy!
